My grandmother made soap and it was harsh. Is this like hers?

Back in their day, our grandmothers guessed at the ratio of lye solution to fats. They usually used kitchen drippings and fat trimmings. They did not know that each fat required a different amount of lye to turn it to soap. Today we use accurate math equations and computers to make a purer and milder soap.
